Top scorers list after incomplete round III of 2013-14 RRC season

After completing first and second round and one match of round III of 2013/14 RRC Pool phase, some interesting things happened on RRC Top Scorers list. Gregorie Collet from Esztergomi Vitézek RSE is on the top spot with 37 points all scored by boot. 11 successful penalty kicks and 2 conversions from Hungarian full back was enough for him to hold first place at least till next weekend. On second place there is, previous season’s winner, Nik Jurišić from HARK Mladost Zagreb with 29 points (7 conversions and 5 successful penalty kicks). Ivan Rešetar from RK Nada Split is third with 20 points (4 tries from round one).

From fourth to eighth place there are Milan Orlović from RK Pobednik MOZZART Belgrade (19 points – 3 tries and 2 conversions), Filip Mijić from RK Zagreb (18 points – 4 successful penalty kicks and 3 conversions), Luka Lerotić from RK Nada Split (15 points – 1 try and 5 conversions), Szabolcs Nagyhegyesi from KARC Kecskemét (13 points – 3 successful penalty kicks and 2 conversions) and Uroš Babić from RK Pobednik MOZZART Belgrade (12 points – 2 tries and 1 conversion).

Distribution of scoring is very interesting; as many as 40 try scorers to achieve 50 tries. 33 players scored one try each. Next weekend there are three more matches and then we will nominate our Pool phase champion.

Jure Mahkota died after long illness

Rugby community in this part of Europe lost one of the most influential members. Jure Mahkota, one of the founders and member of RRC Board, died 4th October 2013, after longtime fight with fatal illness. Jure Mahkota was one of the key members of the Slovenian Rugby, but also well known face in all RRC countries and further. With remarkable playing career, which included longtime serving for his club Koloys (later Ljubljana), he was also national team player both for ex Yugoslavia and Slovenia.

His coaching years included both Ljubljana and Slovenian National Team and his work produced so many great players over the decades. As a mentor, role model and coach, his influence on Slovenian Rugby was immeasurable. Involvement in RRC, since it started in 2007, bring new dimension to his rugby passion. First top scorers list for 2013-14 RRC season…

After first round of 2013/14 RRC Pool phase and four matches played, players from all eigth clubs have entered in RRC Top Scorers list. Early lead was taken by Ivan Rešetar from RK Nada Split (20 points), followed by Gregorie Collet from Esztergomi Vitézek RSE (18 points). On third and fourth place there are Luka Lerotić from RK Nada Split (15 points) and Milan Orlović from RK Pobednik MOZZART Belgrade (14 points). After first round, last year’s RRC top scorer, Nik Jurišić from HARK MLadost Zagreb is on fith place with 12 points scored.

Ivan Rešetar scored four tries in his first match after being absent from RRC for two seasons and thus challenged other “big guns” in the race for this year’s trophy for RRC top scorer. Gregorie Collet successfully landed six penalty shoots in a single match as an indication of this year shooting contest with Lerotić, Orlović, Jurišić, Filip Mijić (RK Zagreb) and other “long range gunners”.

The first four matches brought us 207 points and 30 tries which is more than 50 points and 7 tries per match. Interesting matches and lots of attractive rugby is what we got in the first round and what we hope for in the rest of 2013/14 RRC season.
